Unit - The Events Leading to the Civil War & The war
Connection 1: During the Civil War Irish Catholic Immigrants were not treated as equals, they were persecuted and most of them were not allowed to own land or have religious freedom by law
Connection 2: The poor Irish and German immigrants were seen as a threat, especially to the Americans protectant beliefs. They were often seen as a source for cheap labor.
Unit - Reconstruction Era
Connection 1: During the Reconstruction Era Irish immigrants were actually against ex-slaves moving into the area near Mississippi. Though both groups were marginalized the Irish immigrants held anti-black sentiment, they saw ex-slaves as competition for jobs and political power.
Connection 2: During the Reconstruction Era white Americans held strong anti-Chinese sentiment, so much so that almost every depiction of Chinese immigrants were caricatures these racist portrayals of Chinese immigrants would only feed into the hatred many white Americans had against immigrants of color and because of this hatred sadly there was violence against Chinese immigrants, some Chinese immigrants were even lynched.
Unit - Eastern Encroachment
Connection 1: In 1891, The Immigration Act would restrict who entered the country by stationing inspectors at ports of entry.
Connection 2: The Supreme Courts say that the federal government is responsible for enforcing immigration laws.
Unit - Gilded Age
Connection 1: During the Gilded Age immigrants right became very important because that was when the transcontinental railroad was being built the Chinese immigrants were discriminated against because they were not payed the same salary as the white workers. While building the railroad they also had to work through harsh conditions
Connection 2: The Chinese Exclusion Act was a federal law that did not allow Chinese immigrants to become Americans. This only showed how immigrants did not matter to the US unless they were of use to the government.
